Let's Think This Through

  • This Direct TV commercial manages to make the connection between bad cable and your daughters purity. It’s a pretty ridiculous jump - and also really reinforces the idea of patriarchy and control. It also calls the guy the daughter marries “undesirable” which is a really interesting way of putting it.

  • “As the father of two daughters,” Obama told reporters, “I think it is important for us to make sure that we apply some common sense to various rules when it comes to over-the-counter medicine.”

First of all, the president was not talking about “various rules.” He was supporting a very specific rule, one that prevents young women from easily obtaining a drug that can help them control their reproductive lives, at an age when their economic, educational, familial and professional futures are perhaps most at risk of being derailed by an unplanned pregnancy.

Rebecca Traister (article: “Obama’s woman problem”)

[of course, more than just young people who identify as “women” need access to Plan B. Obama, though, clearly directed his comments at young girls today.]

I hate this. I’m so angry. Well, I mean, then you obviously need to play daddy to the rest of the women in the country. Thank goodness we have a male figurehead to impose his common sense on us.

Oh, STFU already.
I’m not even gonna refute Asshole’s ridiculous claims ‘cause he’s not worth it.
I would have a problem changing my name to my non-existent husband’s but I also have a problem keeping my own last name, as that’s my dad’s and his dad’s and his dad’s and his dad’s last name so what’s the point, ya know? Either way patriarchal concepts are reinforced. Even if I were to take my mother’s “maiden name” it wouldn’t do any good ‘cause that’s her dad’s and his dad’s and his dad’s last name. Cannot. Escape. Patriarchy. Anywhere.
I’ll just be Crap Bag. First name Crap, last name Bag. A practical solution, I think.

UGH. I’m gonna make up steal my own fucking name too. Princess motherfucking Banana Hammock.

How can they BOTH be his in-laws? One of them has to be your actual sister or brother.
Anything anyone says is instantly invalid if your userpic is that stupid Obama Joker thing. Ugh.

Clearly this guy is an idiot. Moving on, I really dislike the “Well it’s patriarchy either way”, because, once you have a name it is YOUR name. If your first name is Samantha because your grandfathers name was Sam, maybe it’s patriarchy, or carrying on a tradition you like or don’t like, but it is your name. Same for the last name.
And, the point, of keeping your last name would be to um, NOT feed the patriarchy monster. And hopefully if enough people see that when two people get married they keep their name and the whole world doesn’t cave in, maybe they’ll start to come around. Maybe not, but its worth hoping for.
I’m still waiting for a legitimate reason a woman changes her name and not man.
