Speaking Truth To Power of the Day: Amy Weber, a happily married lesbian who shares two biological daughters with her wife Tina, speaks to Mayor Janice Daniels at a recent Troy City Council meeting.

Mayor Daniels came under fire earlier this month after anti-gay comments she made on Facebook with respect to New York’s same-sex marriage law were uncovered by a local blog.

  • In case you needed more reasons that Rick Perry shouldn’t be president.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian, but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.
As President, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage.
Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again.
I’m Rick Perry and I approve this message.

  • Shorter University tells employees they must agree to a "Personal Lifestyle Statement"

On Oct. 26 the Baptist university in Rome, Ga. announced that all 200 employees must read and agree to a Personal Lifestyle Statement. Among other things, it commits them to being active members of their church and avoiding the consumption of alcohol in public. “The ‘why’ is really simple: What you stand for matters,” the school said in a statement. “Proverbs 3:5-6 tell us to ‘Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding’… If we acknowledge Him, He will make this university’s path straight.”

Straight being the key word. Employees must also pledge to “reject as acceptable all sexual activity not in agreement with the Bible, including, but not limited to, premarital sex, adultery and homosexuality.”

Emphasis mine. There’s also a petition against it.

  • Straight man couldn't donate blood because he "looked gay"

    thriftedsweaters:

    gaywrites:

    Sit down for this.

A man in Indiana recently went to donate blood, but he was refused the opportunity.

During the screening process at Bio-Blood Components Inc., Aaron Pace, 22, was told he could not donate blood because he “appears to be a homosexual.”

He’s straight. And they sent him home because he looks gay.

The FDA has had a ban on MSM (men who have sex with men) donating blood since 1977 as a way to reduce the risk of HIV transmission in donated blood. Don’t get me started on how homophobic this policy is; it’s been proven that there are ways to keep the risk of HIV low while letting gay men donate. There are effective policies in Europe that allow gay men to donate, but we simply haven’t tried them.

But now we’re going to go a step further and deny people the privilege of donating blood, of saving a human life, of giving part of themselves so another can benefit, because someone LOOKS gay? Because we’re so homophobic we can decide who a person has slept with just by looking at them? You’ve got to be kidding me.

I hope this isn’t the last we hear of this. I demand an explanation.

The MSM ban makes me angry every time I think about it.

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Mostly, because every single person who has AIDS is not a gay male. So how effective is this strategy? But really, looking gay?

    • The founder of the first women’s homeless shelter dies at 85. From this article: “Kip Tiernan was dumbfounded when she saw women disguising themselves as men to get a meal at a men-only homeless shelter in Boston nearly 40 years ago — so much so that she went ahead and founded the nation’s first homeless shelter for women.”

    • Currently Reading

So I’m currently reading “She’s Not There” by Jennifer Finney Boylan. And I would really recommend it! The book is a memoir about Boylan’s transition of male to female. As a writer anyway, Boylan does a great job of highlighting important moments, but also adding plenty of wit.

And it’s also a great story, which can sometimes get lost in memoirs. I’m constantly excited to see what happens next.

Boylan begins life as a male, and lives that way for decades, even getting married and having children before she makes any sort of transition. She worked as a professor as a college, and includes in the book the email she sent to her colleagues letting them know of her new gender, as well as a variety of responses.

I have a David Sedaris book up next in my queue right now, but I’d love to know if you have any book recommendations?

    • What Does The Bible Actually Say About Gay Marriage?

This is a gender creation story, not a creation of marriage story. Adam and Eve do not exchange rings, say “I do” and have a jazz band reception in Paradise.

      and:

The Bible “says” a lot of things but perhaps we should treat the Bible less like an authoritative contract with God and understand it more as a human-authored, divinely-inspired, document that arouses a life of faith.

So does the Bible have anything to “say” about gay marriage? The Bible is not specific, literate, or even concerned with what we call same-sex orientation or gay marriage. But the state of New York recently had quite a lot to say about gay marriage. Those that would insert the Bible into this debate would do well to reflect upon the text itself. If only we quit focusing on what the Bible didactically “says” and converse with the text in its broader cultural context. Then one can realize the multivalent value of such a book that a narrow reading cannot service.

      • I really did love the “It Gets Better” project at first. It’s a great concept. And now Target has jumped on board, despite coming under some heavy fire for choosing some pretty anti-gay recipients of their money. I felt the same way when President Obama made a video. It’s a great message. But you have the power to make some real change. Do it. Put your money where your mouth is.
