  • MotherJones weighs in on requiring Drug Tests for the Unemployed

Jesse Rothstein, an economist at the University of California-Berkeley who has studied unemployment insurance, says there’s little evidence that lack of education or drug addiction is the main problem for most unemployed people. “Most of the problem right now is that there aren’t enough jobs,” he says. The most recent data from the Bureau on Labor Statistics backs him up, showing 6.9 million people receiving unemployment insurance (out of a total 14 million without work) versus 3.4 million job openings in September. The BLS data “implies that measures aimed at getting people to look harder for jobs aren’t likely to be very useful,” Rothstein adds.

Emsellem thinks the GOP bill sets the wrong tone. “This is about as punitive as you can get,” he says. “It’s almost like they threw every dastardly idea they could come up with and threw it on the wall to see what would stick.”

I saw this on facebook today. I don’t support Occupy for the same reason this person doesn’t. I’m not trying to start an argument, I just respect people like this, and I can’t respect people who ask to be given things or who blame others. To be a winner you have to be strong, and you have to help yourself.

I’ve seen this picture floating around. I’d like to make a few points:
A. Simply because you have no problem doing something does not mean that everyone else in this country can. I.E “If I can do a cartwheel backwards with my eyes closed YOU SHOULD TOO”
B. Many people work their ass off and are a part of the movement.
C. Minimum wage and living wage are not the same. So, with no taxes on minimum wage at 30 hours per week this person makes approximately $870 a month. Where do you live in which you can pay tuition, rent, groceries, bills, gas (you said you don’t have a new car - not no car) and still be putting money in savings? But let’s say you are. AWESOME. But how can you not understand how that might be hard for someone? Or harder under different circumstances, like distance to get to work, medical issues, etc?
D. You are missing the point of the 99%. You may not want to take part in the movement, unless you are also a billionaire on your minimum wage job, you are the 99%. Literally, even if you don’t stand with OWS. Sorry.

  • College Republicans Express White Men’s Oppression Through Bake Sale

    notaskingforpermission:

“College Republicans at the University of California-Berkeley are making waves in the shape of a million eyes simultaneously rolled by charging customers at their bake sale based on their race and gender.

The club plans to hold a bake sale Tuesday wherein white men are charged $2 per item, Asian men pay $1.50, Latino men pay $1, black men pay $.50, and Native American men pay $.25. Women get a 25 cent discount from those prices. Native American women eat free.

Do you know the Muffin Man? He’s kind of racist!

The protest is designed to draw attention to the fact that the state of California may allow its state university system to consider race and gender in admissions and that, my friends, is unfair to whites, and especially to white men, who for thousands of years have suffered at the hands of cruel women and minorities.”

    Really guys?

I feel like logical people would be like “Oh! I get it. Cause white men make the most money right? And you guys are pointing out how unfair it is that hispanic women make half as much as white dudes? Man. What a brilliant way to showcase the wage gap including both race and gender!”.

    But apparently not these guys.

What does it look like when an education reporter gets schooled by Matt Damon and his mom? Like this.

Thank you, Matt Damon. Everyone should watch this. I can’t believe they really said an actor has to worry about job security but a teacher doesn’t.
