• The Fight for the National Women's History Museum

  The National Women’s History museum has been years and years in the making. There’s been discussion in congress about budget, and the bill supporting the NWHM got caught up in the Senate after some intervention by the Concerned Women for America, a conservative group, and after some senators decided there were already museums dedicated to such things (like the National Cowgirl Museum in Texas).

  In response to this, Meryl Streep (yes, that Meryl Streep) pointed out that we have museums dedicated to spies and the postal service - but none for women.

  The museum has some exhibits currently online, and lists its purpose as:

  Women’s contributions and accomplishments for the most part have been overlooked and consequently omitted from mainstream culture. The National Women’s History Museum will help fill that void. Rather than rewriting current exhibitions at other history museums or having to decide what to omit elsewhere to “fit in” women’s history, the NWHM will serve to place women’s history along side current historical exhibitions.
