Update on JC Penny Shirt →
JC Penny has removed the shirt in question from my last post, responding with this statement:
We agree that the “Too pretty” t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize for any concern we may have caused and assure you that we are...

"I'm too pretty to do homework, so my brother does... →
This line might sound like something said on a ridiculous ABC family show or something. But, no, it’s actually scribbled on the front of a shirt being marketed to girls ages 7-16.
Cause you know, girls shouldn’t have to think when being pretty takes so much effort. You can sign a petition to tell JC Penny how you feel here.

Talking to Somone About Domestic Violence
If you believe someone you know is being abused, here is some advice on going about discussing your concerns:
Ask if something is wrong.
Express concern. - “I am very concerned. I feel afraid for your safety. I want you to know that I am here for you. Tell me how I can be helpful to you. I am offering my help to you.”
Listen and validate.
Offer help.

This blogger bought a Jessica McClintock wedding dress for a penny, and is giving it away on her blog. Awesome way to Pay it Forward. My wedding dress is used, but can I still do a blog giveaway for it? Kidding, but I will most likely try to sell it on Craigslist for $10, but I feel like no on would want it. But I also find it hard to believe the money some people drop on these dresses, so what...

The Fight for the National Women's History Museum →
ancientamature:
sociallyconstructed:
The National Women’s History museum has been years and years in the making. There’s been discussion in congress about budget, and the bill supporting the NWHM got caught up in the Senate after some intervention by the Concerned Women for America, a conservative group, and after some senators decided there were already museums dedicated to such things (like...

Study Finds Marked Rise in Intensely Sexualized... →
The painfully obvious:
A study by University at Buffalo sociologists has found that the portrayal of women in the popular media over the last several decades has become increasingly sexualized, even “pornified.” The same is not true of the portrayal of men.

Warren Jeffs Sentanced to Life in Prison
Polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs has been convicted to life in prison for sexual assault of his two underage “wives”. One of the girls was only 15 when she gave birth to Jeff’s child.
I have to admit, I am pleased that Jeffs was a given a stern sentencing. I remember watching the news as the girls from his compound were taken away, and just being so heartbroken for them. I...

Man Denied Coverage for Breast Cancer Because He's... →
For breast cancer to be covered, it must be diagnosed by an “early detection” program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and in South Carolina, the screening program is offered only to women between the ages of 47 and 64. Because men do not qualify for the early screening program, they are not covered by the cancer treatment act.

A teenage boy raised $40,000 for the Houston Area Women’s Center. What an awesome project!
Being nontraditional and trendy at the same time - maybe it’s a conundrum, but it works out.
Are wedding dresses so expensive because they show a commitment to marriage, or just because we’re willing to pay for them? I vote the second one, quite personally.
A well written post on the...

Parents, are you worried about your baby girls style? Are you afraid she’s too bald? Maybe people will think shes (*gasp*) a boy!
Lord knows you can’t have that. So, buy you infant a wig! That’s right. Just in case you wanted to start sending message that your daughter better use any means necessary to be deemed “pretty” there is a product for you.

The Problem with The Smurfs
So, I hadn’t really thought much about The Smurf Movie. I did briefly think about how unfortunate it was that the Smurfs are mostly male. There’s just Smurfette. But like a lot of people, I’m sure, I remember watching the Smurfs when I was younger, and liking it.
But after looking at the Smurf toys that come in McDonald’s happy meals, I realized there is really a problem....

FDA Possibly Classifying Birthing Pools as... →
When I first read this, I thought Oh good! They are taking natural childbirth seriously! But, that’s not actually the case. Apparently this would make them harder, if not impossible, to purchase.
For the record, the story so far seems to pretty much be hearsay, based on a shipment of pools being seized in Portland.
I hope that this is all a huge misunderstanding, and that we would take...

A New Era for Women’s Health →
For women, contraception and birth control services are safe, effective and promote good health. More than half of women of reproductive age — some 36 million women — needed contraceptive services and supplies in 2008, and 17.4 million of them needed publicly funded contraception. For these women, eliminating expensive co-pays is the key to ensuring they have access to the care they...
